04.12.2020 Liquid-Crystal Society Seminar

The anniversary (seventieth) Seminar of the Liquid-Crystal Society “Commonwealth” “Liquid Crystals”, organized within the framework of the collaboration between Lomonosov Moscow State University and Moscow Region State University, has taken place ONLINE on Dec. 4, 2020. The report “Molecular nature of liquid-crystal heterogeneities” by Alexander V. Emelyanenko, Doctor of Science, Professor RAS, head of the Laboratory of Liquid Crystals at the Faculty of Physics of MSU (e-mail: emel@polly.phys.msu.ru), was presented.

The video of report is available at the following reference:

It is discussed in the report about how it is possible to describe the heterogeneities of the director and order parameters in the smectic, nematic and conventionally isotropic* phases, and also the transitions between them, being based exclusively on the symmetry of the pair interaction potential of liquid crystal molecules. The expressions for the translational and orientational order parameters are presented, as well as their gradients and five elastic constants in the general form - without any presuppositions about the structure of liquid crystal, based on symmetry of its boundaries. It is shown that the nano-scopic defects in the liquid crystals create the areas around themselves with the lowered order parameters, which can be observed in the optical microscope. This opens wide perspectives for creating the simple optical methods of the visualization of nano-objects. *We call “conventionally isotropic” the phase with miserable orientational ordering of molecules, which arises instead of the isotropic phase in the presence of rigid surfaces.
